If you’re looking for a study in contrast, the flight from Bhutan into Bangkok is like being transported to another planet. Bangkok is huge and noisy and crowded and so much fun. Malls! Modernity! Cheap stuff made in China! On top of that, it has a heaping spoonful of Buddhism and the food is the real deal. After spending a few days in Bangkok, we flew down to Phuket to see the beach, then up to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai to look at more temples and meet some elephants.

We rode elephants in Chiang Rai. It was less comfortable than riding a horse, but it might be a fun way to commute to work. The hotel works with the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation which performs street rescues and provides employment for elephants and their entire mahout families.
